The sizes YouTube actually stores

When you upload one thumbnail, YouTube generates and stores up to five versions of it on its image servers. These are the files you get when you download a thumbnail:

Design for 168 pixels, not 1280

On a desktop search results page, your thumbnail renders around 360 pixels wide. In the suggested sidebar it is 168 pixels. On phones it varies between those. Nobody ever sees your 1280 pixel masterpiece at full size in the feed. Practical rules that follow from this:

Three to five words of text maximum, at a size readable when the image is 168 pixels wide.
One clear focal point (usually a face) instead of a busy scene.
